Gervonta Davis Biography

Gervonta Davis is an American professional boxer. He is a two-weight world champion, having held the WBA (Super) super featherweight title since 2017 (promoted to full titleholder in 2019), and previously the IBF featherweight title from 2015 to 2016. As of September 2020, he is ranked as the world’s fifth best active super featherweight by The Ring magazine, sixth by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and seventh by BoxRec.

Early Life

Davis was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 27, 1994. He is the only child of Gervonta Davis Sr. and Tiffany Phillips. His father was a former boxer who fought in the welterweight division. When Davis was seven years old, his father was shot and killed. His mother worked multiple jobs to support the family.

Early Career & Achievements

Davis began boxing at the age of five. He had an amateur record of 145–8. In 2012, he won the National Golden Gloves tournament in the bantamweight division. In 2013, Davis turned professional. He was managed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and promoted by Mayweather Promotions.

On August 16, 2014, Davis fought for the first time on national television, headlining a Showtime-televised card from Las Vegas. He knocked out his opponent Luis Sanchez in the second round.

In 2015, Davis won the IBF featherweight title with a knockout victory over José Pedraza. He successfully defended the title twice before losing it to Leo Santa Cruz in 2016.

In 2017, Davis won the WBA (Super) super featherweight title with a knockout victory over Francisco Fonseca. He has since made five successful title defenses.

Davis is known for his quick hand speed, power punching, and knockout ability. He is currently undefeated as a professional boxer.
