Joe Lopez was born in Colorado Springs Colorado on September 29, 1944 to a Mexican American family. After high school he joined the Navy and served for 4 years during which time he saw action in Vietnam.
In 1968 after his service to his country, Joe began studying Fine Arts at the University of Northern Colorado from where he received his BFA degree in 1972. He later taught Art there while working on an MFA degree which he received in 1974.
Joe came out to Los Angeles in 1976 with his family and continued teaching while continuing with some work as an artist on the side. It wasn’t until 1979 that Joe started showing work more consistently, mainly solo shows around LA county but also venturing into larger group exhibits across the west coast of America.
